Sony's Motion Controller Is The PlayStation Move [Gdc]

Say goodbye to the Arc or Gem and hello to the PlayStation Move. Sony has revealed the official name for its motion controller, coming this fall in three forms - alone, with the PlayStation Eye, or bundled with a PS3.

The European trademark office spilled the beans a bit early, but that doesn't stop Sony from being excited about the PlayStation Move.

Speaking at Sony's GDC press conference, which we are liveblogging here, Sony's Peter Dille hyped up the Move, saying that "previous motion devices have used controller simply as pointer of mouse — ours becomes an extension of your body."

"We're approaching this like a virtual platform launch," Dille continued, explaining that the Move will be available by itself, with the PlayStation Eye, which it will work in conjunction with,...

City, state move to improve nursing home safety

Chicago and state officials are moving forward with legislative proposals to improve safety inside the state's troubled nursing homes.

After two hearings, 48th Ward Ald. Mary Ann Smith today introduced ordinance amendments designed to strengthen city inspections of nursing facilities, increase enforcement and penalties and require the homes to make public more details of their financial and safety records.

Her proposed amendments will be considered in the City Council Health Committee before being taken up by the full council in a process that could take "a couple of months," Smith said. "Now we will see how the lobbyists and industry try to play their hand."

Meanwhile, Gov. Pat Quinn's office said it plans to introduce legislation in coming days to implement the recommendations of the governor's Nursing Home Safety Task Force, which was formed in response to Tribune articles on rapes, attacks and murders in facilities that house elderly and disabled residents al...

A man given probation just two days ago for criminal damage to property died Tuesday night after plunging into the Chicago River while being chased by police for tagging a building.

Jason Kitchekeg, 26, of Mokena was one of three men being chased by officers for spray-painting a building on Ashland Avenue, police said. Kitchekeg, a longtime Uptown resident, was likely tagging an abandoned paint manufacturing plant there.

Cops caught two of the men, but Kitchekeg jumped into the river near the 2800 block of South Ashland, officials said. He died of drowning in an accident, an autopsy by the Cook County medical examiner's office found today.

Aided by a helicopter, the police Marine Unit and Fire Department personnel worked for about 30 minutes to rescue the ma...

Cops: School bus driver drunk while taking kids from school

A Mount Prospect school bus driver was nearly three times over the legal limit for alcohol after she dropped off about 50 children from an elementary school, police say.

Betty Burden, 54, of the 1440 block of Park Drive, was arrested late Tuesday afternoon after police got a call from Vincente Ramirez, the transportation supervisor with Mount Prospect School District 57 around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Another bus driver had smelled alcohol on Burden's breath at 2:30 p.m., before she took off from Lions Elementary School. But school officials said state law prevented either her or Ramirez from confronting Burden.

Instead, Ramirez followed the bus and eventually called police. By the time officers pulled her over around 4 p.m., Burden had dropped off all the children, officials said.
